Cindy is a modern take on Cinderella, where Cindy is a down-to-earth, motivated young girl set on becoming a pilot. When she goes to the three-day dance festival hosted by Prince Rupert at the behest of her mother’s spirit (inhabiting the family cow), she has to duck her wicked stepsisters and the advances of the prince so she can have her fun in peace. Helped by her rat friend Rudy, she finds the power to strike off on her own and write her own story.
Inspired by the modern language of the play, as well as the very modern sensibilities, the design for the show was something of a fairytale-meets-punk-meets-street-style aesthetic. Art installations from Redgrooms inspired the set as well as the bright colors and mixed textures of the costumes.
“Annie Ulrich’s costumes are flashy, contemporary and exciting, and the animal puppets are haunting and beautiful to behold.”
